Works in Process, or Notes on the Potential of Decay
This body of work explores the impermanence of the natural environment and its perpetual potential for change, innovation and rebirth.
The series depicts a collecton of small pieces of wood in various stages of decay. The wood was eroded, processed and rubbed down to the bone by myriads of small creatures – woodworms, beetles, ants and fungi – over and extended period of time.
These still objects are more than archaeological remains, documenting the growth and decay of plant life: invisible to our eyes, the rotting wood is still teaming with activity. Microscopical organisms, undeterred, continue to break down its structure and work towards its ultimate rearrangement into new and fertile matter.
Stark contrasts of light and shadow on the surface of the wood and its interplay with the unexpected marks left by animal, plant, and fungal activity transform the rotting pieces into worlds of their own: places of process and sites of possibility.
The unfolding of change and decay is highlighted in this ongoing series through the use of expired photographic paper, which often leads to unpredicted marks and colourations in the development process. Some photographs relate to nature's ability to reuse and reconfigure organic matter by combining different negatives and printed images in a collage-like method.
