A special invitation goes out to photo artist Caroline Roberts from the USA, through the Halide Project darkroom in Philadelphia. The Living Image is an annual juried show at the Halide Project darkroom gallery in Philadelphia, USA. For the 2025 jury they invited Stig Marlon Weston, photographer and manager at CYAN studio to jury their Open Call for the exhibition. And on behalf of CYAN he chose to offer a darkroom residency as an extra prize to be given out to one chosen photographer.
Jurying the submissions the work of Caroline Roberts stood out as both intriguing, interesting and innovative and she was selected for this invitation.
CYAN darkroom is happy to welcome Caroline Roberts from UK/USA in October and we are looking forward to introducing her to our community in Oslo.
There were so many varied and impressive submissions for the Open Call exhibition. It turned into a group show of 36 different works ranging from straight silvergelatin prints to sculptural lumenprints, cyanotypes, modrancage and polaroid manipulations. Still, it was not so hard to choose who to invite to come to visit us in Oslo.
Caroline Roberts uses a mixture of cameraless and experimental techniques in her projects, focusing on nature and our relationship to the world. Frustrated by our fencing off and general ignorance of the natural world she explores our human attempts to classify, investigate and understand as a way to preserve an illusion of control. Her photographic installations play on well-established knowledge systems, such as the herbarium, the museum display, the field guide, and the library. Born in the United Kingdom, Roberts lives and works in Houston, Texas. She has a MFA in painting from University of Houston, has exhibited with many galleries in the USA and taught numerous classes and workshops in alternative photographic processes.
While in Oslo she will continue exploring a new experimental process she is working on. She will also take part in the group exhibition that CYAN darkroom will put up at the Oslo Negativ photofestival. CYAN will host a workshop with Caroline on her work with cyanolumens, a combination process of cyanotype and lumentprinting. And Oslo Fotokunstskole will host her for an open public artist presentation.
